Boarding Schools in England

The Concept

Leo Hill has over the years established many contacts at private boarding schools in England. Many of these connections were facilitated by his father, Graham Hill, who has been the headmaster of a private school in London for the past thirty years.

Thanks to these networking activities, Mr Hill is able to offer you a choice of schools, specially tailored to the specific needs of your child. With his vast experience in the field of school placement, Mr Hill is adept at judging which school is best suited for your son or daughter, thereby ensuring that their stay in England is not only successful, but also highly enjoyable and most memorable.

There are two basic types of courses on offer:

- One is called the Pre-IB (International Baccalaureate Diploma) Year, which is a one-year course for children in Year 10 with a view of returning to their German schools for Years 11 and 12. Children in Year 9 should contact Let's Study English between September and December if they wish to participate in this course.
- The second is an Oberstufe course, this being a two-year programme and known in England as joining the Sixth Form. This is the English equivalent to the German Abitur. Upon return, children having completed this course are qualified for university entrance in both England and Germany.

Again, children in Year 10 should contact Let's Study English between September and June if they wish to participate in this two-year course.
As these options are more long-term in their duration, it is highly recommended that you and your child meet with Let's Study English to discuss the matters at hand in more detail and to get a better feel for the undertaking in general.

The Preparatory Course

This is a special course aimed at preparing your child for the all-important interviews and tests at the boarding schools in England. The course consists of five weekly meetings in which you son or daughter is more closely acquainted with the procedures that they will face when presenting themselves to the schools in question.

During the preparatory course, we will be discussing:
- The difference between A-Levels (the English system) and Abitur (the German system).
- The concept of boarding school life, i.e., what it means to be a member of a boarding house.
- The significance of playing sport (traditional English school sports like rugby, cricket and rowing, for example) for the school or house, its importance in forming friendships outside the classroom and promoting the essence of teamwork and camaraderie.

We will also be viewing DVDs about the schools and looking at brochures of the three schools that interest your son or daughter the most. The course will be of a modular structure, meaning that we will start by getting to know each other, the child's requirements and wishes, moving on to choosing the most suitable school and finally preparing for the application and interview processes.

Travel Tips

When travelling to England, Let's Study English likes to recommend Craven House, luxury serviced apartments in London. These are centrally located in the borough of Richmond on the River Thames, five minutes from the centre of London by underground. The location is particularly convenient, being close to Heathrow and Gatwick airports and the boarding schools in question.
We also recommend using Hertz Rental Cars when hiring a car for your various travels throughout the area, with many other families having availed themselves of their services to their absolute satisfaction. A chauffeur-driven car company is also available. Please feel free to contact Let's Study English for details.
